Program Description

The Innovation Certificate Program is designed for clinicians to develop and enrich entrepreneurial skills and business knowledge for those interested in learning how to bring technologies to market. The program was launched in 2023 and directed by Drs. Steven Goudy and Adam Klein from the Department of Otolaryngology at Emory. The program is expanding this year to include a partnership with Portal Innovations, a premier life science venture capital fund, and co-directed by Ashley Cornelison, Executive Director at Portal Innovations. The program will feature speakers from across the Atlanta Innovation ecosystem from Portal Innovations, Georgia Tech, Goizueta Business School, Georgia Research Alliance, the Emory Office of Tech Transfer, and more.

Topics

Program topics will focus on stages of the commercialization process from identifying a gap in the market and generating a concept to funding a startup and identifying an exit strategy.

Time Commitment and Project Structure

The program encompasses eight (8) 2.5-hour sessions held approximately once a month on a Wednesday evening. In-person attendance is required and sessions will be rotated between Emory's HSRB II on campus and Portal Innovation's office in Midtown. Light food and refreshments will be provided at each session. Once accepted into the program, participants will be grouped into project teams and apply their learnings to identify a real unmet clinical need, propose a technology solution, and develop a plan to bring it to market. Each session will include a presentation/lecture followed by designated time to work on team projects. The course culminates in pitch presentations for the last session.
